Diversity and ‘diffability’ – inclusive approaches to translating children’s literature

Diversity and ‘diffability’ – inclusive approaches to translating children’s literature

Translating is never just about the words on the page, but how much more is there to think about when translating books for children and young people that explore disability, or ‘diffability’ – differently abled protagonists? Drawing on her experience of translating picture books about disability, Ruth will share examples of the creative role a translator can play in bridging the gap between the original book and its translation, sometimes adapted for a new audience.

September is World Kid Lit Month, and in the first of two children’s literature webinars, Ruth will showcase the wealth of resources for translators, including IBBY’s annual Collection for Young People with Disabilities. Ruth will also highlight some recent translations for older readers, and share tips on developing an awareness of inclusive, non-ableist language, and of inclusive editorial practices within children’s publishing.
