New UOC language resource pages

World English?

A few weeks ago the UOC Language Service and Library launched new pages of language resources in Catalan, Spanish and English. They include all kinds of great information on common problems, grammar, vocabulary, spelling, style, translation and a host of other items. Well worth bookmarking and highly recommended. Our congratulations to those who worked to put these materials together.

I struggle to find anything to criticise but to be honest I have a slight peeve with the links to resources. For example, if you click on the Merriam-Webster link on the English resources page, you are taken to an intermediate page, from where you have to click again to go to the dictionary. In effect, all the resources are not just a click away; they are two clicks away. This is going to wear my clicker out!

Another thing I’m not that keen on is the use of maps like the one above, which purports to show where English is spoken in the world. If only things were so simple!

Well, if these are my only gripes, you can see how useful these pages will be for all of us. Hurry along!
